Tendai Buddhism
This Tendai-sect temple is located in koaigimachi, Maebashi City, Gunma Prefecture.
It is said to have been founded in 1615, during the early Edo period in Japanese history.
The main gate at the front of the temple grounds, known as the Sōmon(総門), was built in 1712. This single-story, four-legged gate features six supporting pillars, with the main pillars in the center and supplementary pillars in front and behind. The roof is in a gabled style and covered with metal plates.
One of the temple’s treasures, the Tahōtō(多宝塔) (multi-storied pagoda), was crafted by the Edo-period metal caster Hyōbu Kawai. It is made of gilt bronze, stands 140 cm tall, and is intricately designed. Inside, it houses six Buddha statues and eight scrolls of scriptures. Both the Sōmon and the Tahōtō have been designated as Important Cultural Properties of Maebashi City.
Since its founding, Daitoku-ji has been an integral part of the local community, living alongside the people of the region. The temple continues to dedicate itself daily to spreading the teachings of the Tendai sect and serving as a vital part of community life.
